My new office-mate: I'll just go make these copies...
Me: Dude, just let Lada do it. She's the secretary, that's what she's for.
New: Oh, of course! [laughs] It's funny how they just use that term so openly over here!
Well, color me mystified. Is secretary a dirty word now? What the hell?

nooo...I think it's that your new office mate is smoking teh shrooms.
The bank that I worked in pretty much (officially) treated "secretary" as a dirty word--I think it supposedly has acquired some sort of demeaning connotation. The accepted term was "administrative assistant" or "assistant," even though these terms seemed to imply a closer relationship to the assisted than was usually the case. (Unofficially, though, people still said "secretary". Like "African-American", "Administrative Assistant" is just a pain to say.)
